This month’s Electrical Connection Joe’s Tips topic is on the code change for exterior wall electrical device boxes (eg. Switch box).
Up until recently we used metal boxes with a plastic vapour barrier around it. That method is no longer acceptable due to changes in the local codes. A good electrician keeps up on the changes in codes to ensure every job is up to the latest standards and codes which are intended for your safety.
The most acceptable method is using a weatherproof exterior plastic box which does not require a vapour barrier at all because it is a sealed unit already. The most cost effective method is using plastic boxes.
Outdoor Electrical Box
Weatherproof outdoor boxes are sealed enclosures designed for mounting to the surface of exterior walls, roof overhangs, decks, and other structures. They are used for installing outdoor receptacles (outlets) and light fixtures. Outdoor boxes must have an outdoor cover or fixture rated for damp or wet locations, depending on the application.
